CHAPTER 1
THE ART OF T'AI CHI
What is T'ai Chi?
T'ai Chi is now generally categorised in the western world
as a "healthy exercise" and is increasing in popularity, but
what is it?
There are many misconceptions about T'ai Chi and many
questions that someone embarking on their journey of
exploration will need answering.
Is it a martial art? If so, what is its intent? Is it
aggressive, or is it purely defensive?
Is it a just a gentle exercise? If so does it have any
intent or is it just aerobic?
How is it practised today? How does it differ from other martial art or
exercise programs?
Does it have additional or less health benefits than those that are
achieved with normal exercise programs?
Do I have to start when I'm young or can anyone of any age gain benefit
by starting? Do I have to be fit, agile and supple to start?
Does it take long to learn? How long do I have to practise to gain benefit?
Hopefully by reading on, the answers will fall into place and you'll be able to enjoy
and advance your T'ai Chi and see for yourself the improvements that it will bring
to your life.
Origins of T'ai Chi
T'ai Chi has its origins rooted in Taoist philosophy. The basic concepts are alleged
to have developed in Northern China around 1000 years ago during the Sung
dynasty (AD960-1279).
